Terminologies

  • RS = rough sawn timber( cheaper than DT but not as aesthetically pleasing) used mainly on side and back fences.
  • DT = Dressed Timber = Smooth finish( more expensive than RS used mainly on front fences.
  • KB= Kickboard or horizontal base board
  • Capping rail = A horizontal rail that caps the top of the fence and covers the top of the palings.
  • Scotia a decorative finishing detail that fits under the cap and onto the palings. Mainly aesthetic.
  • Staggered joins = not all rails ending on the same post = greater strength
  • Skewed = at an angle to the adjacent plane
  • H4 = ground level treated timber(posts)
  • H3 = weather & parasite protected treated timber(rails, palings, scotia, capping rail. KB)
  • SHS =  steel hollow section = gates
  • Galv. = galvanized steel = no rust= gates
  • SLP = standard lapped paling(RS) = cheapest for of fence.
  • P&G = plane & gauged= DT  = Smooth finish
  • Dressed posts = posts usually larger cross sectional area. Used mainly for gate posts. They can be decorated in many ways. Such as Pyramid style cap, Cornice, KB and Trim
  • Cornice L – shaped end profile timber lengths that run the length of the post down each corner. Creating a negative detail effect.
  • Oriental trellis formation = horizontal slats
  • Diamond trellis formation = square trellis formation rotated through 90 degrees
  • Square trellis formation = vertical and horizontal slats at 90 degrees to eachother
